A magical bakery in modern-day Paris
You play as a young witch who moves to Paris and opens her own bakery. Orio, a little cat-like creature, keeps her company and gives her a hand behind the counter. Her name is Lunne and she can see what the people walking through the door are feeling. So she sets out to heal their emotional wounds with fresh bread and a pinch of magic.

The whole game is hand-drawn, with that cozy fantasy style that reminds me of Kiki’s Delivery Service. If you like games with a gentle pace and a story that leaves you with warm fuzzy feelings, this one could be for you.
Day and night cycle
Each day is split into chunks. During the day you serve customers with Orio, and later on you head out to explore Paris, chat with the neighbours, make friends and slowly uncover the city’s secrets. At night you go back to Lunne’s workshop to study recipes, read books and improve your magic, and you can decorate the bakery to your liking while you’re at it.
The city is divided into districts, each with its own characters, shops and recipe books. One of them is the Quai des Bouquinistes, by the Seine, with its stalls full of vinyl records, posters and old magazines and Notre-Dame in the background. I have to admit the developers did a great job with this realistic setting.

The Heart Palaces
This is the part that draws me in the most, and the most fantastical part of the whole game. Some characters keep their feelings locked away, so Lunne can step into their Heart Palace (an inner world where emotions take physical form). Inside you wander through mazes, look for the lost emotion and walk it back to the heart. At the end of the path you find the key ingredient to bake the bread that heals them.

According to Silver Lining, the stories deal with the sadness, fear and pain of Lunne’s neighbours. I suspect more than one of them will tug at our heartstrings.
Physical edition
The physical edition comes out tomorrow, 16 October, for PS5, Switch and Switch 2. It costs €34.99 / $34.99 / £29.99 and you can get it from Silver Lining Direct and in shops. Every copy includes a digital cookbook with real French pastry recipes, so you can keep baking away from the screen.
The opening song is by Cécile Corbel, the Breton harpist and composer who wrote the music for Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty.
What else is there to know about The Witch’s Bakery?
Sunny Lab moved the launch from August to October. The team explained that there were still some bugs to fix and that they wanted to avoid September, a month packed with big releases and events.

Next stop is mobile. It will reach Android and iOS through Crunchyroll Game Vault, with no date yet and only for Mega and Ultimate Fan members. There won’t be a Mac version. On Steam, as I write this, 97% of the first reviews are positive.
If you want to give it a go, the launch discount on Steam lasts until 28 October.
