Nightpyre now has a demo on Steam, a dark fantasy narrative roguelite

Silveil has released the demo for Nightpyre, its dark fantasy narrative roguelite. You can play it free on Steam, Steam Deck included, and it brings its rune-based spell system, a final boss and decisions that change the fate of entire civilisations.

Indie studio Silveil announced today that Nightpyre now has a demo available on Steam. The studio was founded in 2025 and this is the game they have been working on ever since, so it is the first time anyone can really try it.

The premise: breaking the curse of the Eternal Night

You play as the Sacrificed, a hero who has to give up his own inner light to break a curse. The world is called Candlelight and it is drowning in an Eternal Night, so your job is to light the pyres and bring it back.

This is where the roguelite part comes in, and it is the idea I liked most in the press release: every time you die, the world changes. New biomes and challenges appear, and you run into narrative events where your decisions can decide the fate of entire civilisations. It is not just replaying the level with a different seed.

Spells you build out of runes

Combat is what the studio points to as the game’s most distinctive part. You do not pick a spell from a list, you build it on the fly by combining runes of elements and shapes. All in real time, and with a speed and precision that decide whether you survive the fight or not.

Runes are learned or found scattered around the world, so the range of combinations and synergies grows as you go.

What the demo includes

According to the studio, this version lets you try the following:

• Character customisation.
• Spell creation by combining the runes you learn or find.
• Several types of enemies and a final boss that tests what you have learned.
• Pieces of the world’s story hidden in the environment and behind certain dialogue.
• A writing system where you create and customise your own poem.
• A score log that turns you into a star in the night sky, bigger the more areas you light up.

Out of all of that, the poem is the bit I find strangest and most interesting. A roguelite that lets you write something of your own and leave it there is not common in the genre.

Where to play it

The demo is now available on Steam and the studio confirms it can also be played on Steam Deck. The full game still has no release date.
